Before you read his story, hear it in his own words. Peter breaks down what it really takes to make it in the industry.

Meet Peter Gosling

Director of Education at the Glassbox Institute and Co-Owner of Glassbox Barbershop, Toronto and Hamilton

For Peter Gosling, success was never a shortcut. It was built over twenty years of showing up first, leaving last, and working for the best before ever betting on himself.

Peter credits his mother with pushing him toward the industry, at a time his path could have gone a very different way. She saw it in how he cared about his own hair, and in the cuts he gave friends in bathrooms and basements.

“The best gift my mom ever gave me was to push me into this industry.”

At 18, with no skill set and plenty of nerve, Peter went knocking on doors. He refused to take no for an answer, landing his first role with Walter Wong at W Lifestyle, then chasing every chance to learn from the best shops in the city.

“If you’re not working for the best, you can’t expect to be the best.”

Peter waited a decade before betting on himself. In 2015, he co-founded Glassbox Barbershop with Andrew LaGrave, a friend since high school, shaping it into a contemporary destination for grooming defined by precision barbering and an uncompromising standard of service across Toronto and Hamilton. It wasn’t about reinventing the haircut, but about building something with a name, a purpose, and a culture people wanted to belong to. Peter led craft and operations; Andrew’s advertising and marketing background shaped the brand’s positioning and customer experience.

But the heartbeat of everything was always education. In March 2025, the brand broadened its vision with the launch of a licensed hairstyling school under Glassbox Education, while Peter, alongside business partner Mitchell White, established the Glassbox Institute, further advancing its commitment to education, training, and professional development in Canada and beyond. He had seen a gap, technical training had slipped and Toronto lacked a serious downtown school, and made it his mission to close the gap.

“Education is the heartbeat to not only this industry, but every industry.”

Now Peter leads with a focus on culture, mentorship, and growth, actively sending his own students toward shops that invest back into their people. When it came to choosing a distribution partner, he did his own homework. He asked a fellow owner he trusted, got on the phone with his SalonCentric contact, and laid out exactly what he needed.

“SalonCentric has been integral to us, and that’s not a sales pitch. It was me who sourced them. I said, this is what I need, I’m no fluff, I need it direct. She showed up and made it happen. Six months in, it’s been flawless.”

For Peter, working with the best isn’t about prestige. It’s about who shows up. He points to the support that gets SalonCentric educators into his institute to train his own team on colour and cutting, and the brand connections that stand behind his events. “The support we have from that team is by far some of the best I’ve seen,” he says. That’s the standard It Takes a Pro is built on, and it’s the reason Peter keeps choosing SalonCentric.

Q&A with Peter

What did opening Glassbox represent for you?

It was the payoff of patience. I waited ten years before betting on myself, and I worked for the best not just for the skills, but to learn how they operated and why they were the best. If you dream it, you can turn it into reality.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Honest, and built on trust. I don’t care first about how technically good you are; I care about the attitude you bring through the door. Skills can be taught. Attitude can’t.

What role does education play in your business?

It’s everything. People say education is expensive, but it’s more expensive to have uneducated people on your team. If we’re not educated by the brands, how can we educate the client? Those who stay educated stay elevated.

What advice would you give to barbers and stylists who want to grow or open their own business?

If you’re not working for the top five in your neighbourhood, go work for them. Don’t take no for an answer, and understand the word sacrifice. Schedules aren’t given, they’re earned.

How has working with SalonCentric supported your journey as a stylist and salon owner?

It’s been integral to us, and that’s not a sales pitch. I sourced them myself, told them exactly what I needed, no fluff, and they showed up. It lets me lean on other people, and most people are afraid to ask for help. I’m not.

What does “It Takes a Pro” mean to you?

To be a pro is to care. About your clients, your team, your community, your industry. If people cared a little bit more, they’d see their careers grow immensely. Caring is what makes you a professional.
