For Desiree Catana, success was not built on a single breakthrough moment. It was built through instinct, resilience, and a willingness to take risks, even when the outcome was uncertain.

Growing up surrounded by hairstylists, Desiree was introduced to the industry early. From modeling at hair shows to watching artists transform clients backstage, she developed an appreciation for both the creativity and the energy that defines salon life. That early exposure evolved into hands-on experience, experimenting with colour on friends before stepping into her first salon role as a receptionist, where everything clicked. It Takes A Pro - Desiree Catana

“I fell in love with the energy, the people, and how much everyone genuinely loved what they did.”

At 21, Desiree made the move from Ottawa to Toronto, a decision that pushed her out of her comfort zone and forced her to build her own reputation from the ground up.

“I felt like a small fish in a big pond. But it was the first time everything I built was truly mine.”

Her niche in blonding came with intention. After experiencing poor results herself, she recognized the value of mastering a high-demand service and built a loyal clientele around it.

That same mindset carried into opening Baz and Banks in Liberty Village. Launching during the aftermath of COVID, while navigating financial pressure and uncertainty, Desiree took a leap of faith that would define her career.

“I didn’t expect anything from it. I just wanted to do something good.”

What followed was unexpected. The initiative gained widespread media attention, bringing new visibility, clients, and momentum to her business.

But for Desiree, the impact went beyond growth.

“Doing things with good intentions will always come back to you.”

It Takes A Pro - Desiree CatanaToday, as the owner of two salons, Desiree leads with a strong focus on community, mentorship, and long-term growth. She fosters an environment where stylists are encouraged to build their own identity, invest in their education, and define success on their own terms.

“I want my team to feel supported, not just employed.”

Her approach reflects what It Takes a Pro is all about. Not just technical skill, but the mindset to keep learning, take risks, and lead with purpose.

Q&A with Desiree

What did opening your first salon represent for you?

It was the biggest risk I had ever taken. I had no roadmap, I was learning as I went, but I have never been prouder. It showed me that you do not need to have everything figured out, you just need to start.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Supportive and real. I want my team to feel like they can come to me for anything. I have been in their shoes, so I try to lead with empathy, but also with honesty.

What role does education play in your salon?

It is everything. We are always learning, whether that is through shadowing, classes, or sharing knowledge with each other. You cannot grow if you stay comfortable.

What advice would you give to stylists who want to grow or open their own salon?

It is scary, but it is worth it. Talk to people, learn the reality of it, and trust yourself. You do not have to do everything alone.

How has working with SalonCentric supported your journey as a stylist and salon owner?

Having a partner that understands both the creative and business side of the industry makes a huge difference. From access to education to product innovation and support, it helps you stay inspired while also growing your business. It is not just about what you are buying, it is about having the tools and support to keep evolving.

What does “It Takes a Pro” mean to you?

It means being part of a community. It looks different for everyone, but we are all connected by the same passion for what we do.
